Sydenham History Group was formed in 2007 and the first meeting was at the SYDNI Centre in January 2008. Except for the interruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic it has been running ever since.
It came about when the Chair, Nigel Briggs, was talking about the history of the area with the then Manager of the SYDNI Centre, Alaina MacGregor, and she immediately accessed Community Development funding from WCC in order to start a history group and to produce a book on the history of the local area.
Nigel got a group of interested people together and the society was formed. Meetings are held approximately six times a year and are appreciated by not only people from the immediate area but from far and wide.
The book entitled “A Celebration of Sydenham” was launched in 2014 as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the building of the Sydenham Estate. Copies are still available at a cost of £3.
2022 marked the 20th anniversary of the SYDNI Centre. The site was previously Sydenham First School and prior to that Sydenham Farmhouse.
